Days Remain
Psalm 90:12 New International Version (NIV)
12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
The odometer slowly rolls as another mile passes. Each roll of the odometer moves us slowly toward our destination. Our GPS gives us information about where we are and how many miles are in front of us. Each bit of information helps guide our journey. Our family embraced the concept of road trip. We packed up the car each summer and made the 2,000 mile drive from Missouri to California. As the odometer slowly rolled each of those 2,000 miles, we reminded the kids that a road trip is not just about the destination, but it is also about the journey to get there.
In the hours and days following my son’s accident, I was paralyzed with fear. I realized that days remain. The end of his life was not the end of mine. Like an interstate in the midwest, I saw a long road with seemingly no end. How could I even attempt to travel that road without my son and with the impact his loss had on our lives? How will I face the days that remain?
In Psalm 90, God reminds us to number our days. We number things that have value to us. We number the things that we want to keep track of. Each of the days in our past, present and future have value. We can find comfort in God’s omnipresence. God was with us in our past, today, and each mile of our journey ahead of us. If God is there, it has value and purpose. If he placed us here, we have value and purpose.
Each of us face a long road as we face life without the ones we love. The odometer rolls. The journey continues and has value. It is not enough merely to count our days, we must make our remaining days count.
