Who You Say I Am

Who You Say I Am

1 John 3:1 (NIV)

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

[This is the twelfth devotion in a series of twelve songs that have impacted us during our grief journey]

No song is more connected in my mind with the days surrounding December 8, 2018 than Who You Say I Am. It is a song that I discussed with Bryce when he was struggling with his self image. We sat and discussed each line of the song in depth and connected it to scripture. I wanted him to ground his self image in the idea that he is a child of God. After his death, the song reminded me of the assurance that comes with being a child of God. It allowed me comfort knowing that God had prepared a place for him.

In the days after his accident the song repeatedly played on the radio. It acted as a constant reminder to us when we were struggling the most.  It played when we arrived at the cemetery to select a plot. When we drove to pick out his grave marker it played again but this time it was followed by a short devotion about adoption. As the days and weeks passed the song repeatedly played and reminded me that Bryce is a child of God and so am I.

The song was also used in the most important lesson I have ever taught. I was asked to speak at Bryce’s high school chapel a few months after the accident. I used the song to share that same message with his classmates. The message is in the following video link.

Who am I that the highest King

Would welcome me?

I was lost but He brought me in

Oh, His love for me

Oh, His love for me

Who the Son sets free

Oh, is free indeed

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

Free at last, He has ransomed me

His grace runs deep

While I was a slave to sin

Jesus died for me

Yes, He died for me

Who the Son sets free

Oh, is free indeed

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

In my Father's house

There's a place for me

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

I am who You say I am

Who the Son sets free

Oh, is free indeed

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

In my Father's house

There's a place for me

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

In my Father's house

There's a place for me

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

Oh, I am who You say I am

Yes, I am who You say I am

Who the Son sets free

Oh, is free indeed

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am

In my Father's house

There's a place for me

I'm a child of God

Yes, I am
